Can I really show that?

Cavegirl Combat is the first story I've drawn where I've made it public as I go. In the past, I drew stories with the notion already halfway in my mind that no one would see them. This time,  I'm committed to publishing it.

But I continue to draw in a vacuum; no one sees these pages or offers any kind of feedback until they're up on the blog.  And every so often, I step back from what I've drawn – pages you haven't seen yet – and say to myself, "Hmmm. Can I really show that?"

I'm not drawing anything I haven't drawn before, but sometimes I'm drawing it in a way I haven't drawn it before. Maybe the action is more aggressive than I usually draw. Maybe the closeups are tighter. Maybe there are more bodily fluids involved.

And sometimes it's stuff that's probably biologically impossible. One of the advantages of comics versus video.

There's no one around here who can look at this stuff in progress and say, "Oh, that's sexy," or "Oooh, that's gross." (And no, I'm not sending any of you sneak previews. Sorry.)

Ideally, this would be the job of my sexy thirty-something catfighting girlfriend, who would respond to my drawings with a 'meh', or by dragging me by my shirt collar to the floor for an on-the-spot wrestling match. That, unfortunately, is not happening right now.

I subscribe to a blog called inappropriate.co (no 'm'). The art is always gorgeous, which is why I read it, but the subject matter is often, at least for me, stomach-churning. But it reminds me that whatever it is I'm drawing,  there's more extreme stuff out there.

  1. I'll make two comments.

    1. You've never dawn anything that no one loved so far.

    2. More Hairpulling. All catfights need that as the first and most basic of all catfight things.

  2. Brother, everything you've done has shown both brutality and style. PLEASE, go with it for the cavegirl story.
Let them bleed, there there be love juices. Let them grab and claw at each other in the most terrible yet intimate ways.
You can get away with a LOT more when you do it RIGHT. And from what I've seen from your work, you know how to do it right. I have faith that this cavegirl story will be one of the best pieces of female fight art ever written and as a reader, I will be satisfied no matter who wins (although I very much have my choice!)

as a writer of stories that sometimes go over the top as brutal, but never to the death. I identify with your quandry though. I often find myself saying "is this to much? TOO brutal? Too bloody?"
It conflicts with my quite normally peaceful and loving nature to indulge this side of myself, but when I finish my tale I always am glad I took the chance, went over the top, had my winner throw the claws into her enemy's pussy one last time to draw blood.
I'm also thankful that although I don't have a sexy anything-something girlfriend to bounce things off of, I do have an amazing soul and kindred spirit who helps me figure out what works and what doesn't and her taste has so far never failed me.
So PLEASE WB take these two incredible creations of yours to the next level. Do not fear, let them ravage each other like the girls in those old Bellstone comics (to me still the gold standard of brutal femfight art) let them bled for us, let them mangle each other as women, let them be sexy and let their womanly passions flow. We as your readers will be there for you, we wouldn't be here otherwise friend.

  3. If you feel that one of your pics is untasteful or too much for some reason, try putting a witty caption on it (eg one of the fighters saying something that contrasts the brutality/perversity/etc of the pic itself). I believe that that way you can rest assured that noone will say "ugh" when seeing the pic on question.

  4. I believe your style is perfect. You have the brutality of an all out catfight (let them bite and claw each other bloody) yet the women remain very sensual. Personally, anything short of death is not too brutal for my tastes and with what I have seen of your work, this may be the best illustrated story I have will ever see.

  5. I don't recall the first time I saw your work but it just clicked with me when I did. I despaired of ever seeing more of your work (which I like very much) and I am very glad to see you start this blog. That said, it is your blog, your artwork, your effort, your imagination. Don't worry about whether you can "really show that." Just do it; please yourself. I think you will find that most of those who visit this blog share your style and approach to catfighting. They will appreciate what you do -- or they will leave. Those of us who stay, and I think that's most who visit here, can only wait for the next impressive installment. Keep up the good work, please.

  6. Yeah it would be so reassuring to have a studio with other artists of a similar bent to do this stuff in, wouldn't it? I guess that's just our cross to bear: never knowing what will work for your audience and what wont. I like the idea of the girlfriend as art director with a peculiar incentive program!!! WooHoo!
