I have had several inquiries about custom art and commissions since this blog launched.
To reiterate something I wrote previously, the issue for me is the price I could charge for commissions versus what I would make just doing regular freelance art. I spend anywhere from 12 to 18 hours on every panel of Cavegirl Combat. In my local commercial art market, those would be worth a few hundred dollars each.
I don't mind doing that as a labor of love (or lust), but I can't bring myself to spend that kind of time on a commissioned piece that's probably going to bring me less than a hundred dollars.
If I can develop a style or a workflow that can get me to doing a page in four or five hours, then I'll consider commissions.
And even then, they won't be cheap.
work as good as what you do is priceless.
ReplyDeleteIf I had an unlimited supply of money I'd pay you to draw nonstop.
Well thank god it takes you a long time to do this stuff!!! I was scared to death that you knocked one of these pages out in a half hour watching TV!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I think you ought to be able to get decent money for one of these, considering what I see work going for on Ebay. I don't have any first hand knowledge of that but I've heard stories that make it sound like one could get good money if you really wanted to. It would take a lot of time, but I don't think it's impossible.
I have the same thoughts you do about pricing on commissions. What most folks really can pay is insufficient considering the time it takes. But I understand that my audience doesn't have that kind of money on hand.
