Years ago, I built my own font to use in my art. I set it up in Macromedia Fontographer. The software was expensive, the work was tedious and time-consuming, and the results were just barely better than Comic Sans.
Now, thanks to the miracle of modern technology, I can buy professionally-created comic book lettering from web sites, and a dozen different fonts don't cost as much as a single copy of Fontographer.
But having attempted it myself once, I can tell you that it takes a special kind of patience, focus and stick-to-itiveness to draw a font.
