Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman gets into a lot of fights with other women, and needless to say, I'm all for that.

I don't know what particular kinds of covers are more likely to move a mainstream comic, and for the purposes of this blog, it's irrelevant.

But I think this first cover (at left) is pretty representative of fem/fem (or, for that matter, m/m) combat in mainstream comics. They're snarling, their arms are extended, they always sort of seem to be flying – even if, as in this case, they're on the ground.

And maybe – maybe – there will be some actual physical contact involved. Oh, look – their bracelets are touching. Yeah, I'm really hot for that bracelet-on-bracelet action.

But compare that to the absolute hands-down best Wonder Woman cover ever drawn, at right.

Mr. Brian Bolland, you are the man, sir. You know what we like.

Mike Deodato, Jr.'s art, shown above, is all, 'Stay your hand, Amazon, or taste the wrath of Artemis!'

But Bolland? This is pure, 'Bitch, I'm gonna kick your ass!'

I never read this book. But I guarantee you that if I had been visiting comic shops in 1993, this would have jumped off the shelf on its own and attached itself to me. I won't say where.

I had to Google this to find out what the story was about. I guess the woman with the eyepatch is a friend of hers. Which makes it more interesting since it raises the possibility they made out somewhere along the way.

  1. Hi Mr. Beest-

  2. Yes, by all means. I'm a lazy MF, and I need some encouragement to be productive.

  3. This is a great blog--I'm betting (but maybe not) at some point you've read the piece "Hello Out There," some writer's take on his catfight obsession, followed by a short (but good) story and very nice illustrations. This blog is like a longer version of that--I don't see enough (non-idiotic) commentary about this subject so it's great to see this blog. Huge fan of your art.

  4. Those two covers are both depicting a fight between two females, but its like watching a choreographed martial arts fight vs a catfight.

  5. I actually remember seeing that cover in the comic shop! (Both of them, actually) And I remember thinking, maybe I should start buying Wonder Woman... then I realized that my Mom had driven me, and I didn't think I'd get a way with just randomly starting to read Wonder Woman. LMAO
